Awesome Board / Card Games.

Bored?  Sick and tired of playing video games in front of your computer all day?  You want to have some fun with your friends, but the weather is not that great outside?  Sounds like a perfect time to crack open some board games.  Board games are great tool to broaden your social circles as well as some genuine human connection.  (I am looking at you Facebook).  Why not talk, laugh and have fun in person?

Below are some of my recommendations.

1. Settlers of Catan

If you have have a neck for strategy games, I recommend Settlers of Catan.

It’s a classic resource management game.  The chances are you probably have already heard of this game or played it at least once.  Just can’t go wrong with the classic.  2-4 Players.

P.S. There’s a STAR TREK version too!!

2. Eclipse

Eclipse is another Strategy game classic.  Voted as one of the best Space Strategy game ever made.  My friend once reviewed it : “I think this board game was made by a person who couldn’t program a real computer game.”  Hahaha.  Anyway, the game is excellent.  You can have up to 2-6 players.  It may look pretty intimating at first after you lay all the pieces out, but once you get all the rules down, it’s pretty easy to get the game going.

3. Cards Against Humanity

This is not a board game per se, but it’s a perfect game to have in any parties.  18+ only (There’s a reason why It’s dubbed as a “A party game for horrible people” )
, so explicit contents, but is it ever fun!!  You can have as many players as you can, but probably max it out at 7-8 people.  This game is perfect to play with your roomies in the common area or Central Rez.

Rules :

A card game which involves a judge choosing a black question or fill-in-the-blank card. Each player holds a hand of ten cards at the beginning of each round, and each player contributes card(s) to the “card czar” anonymously. The card czar determines which card(s) are funniest in the context of the question or fill-in-the-blank card.

The player who submitted the chosen card(s) is given the question card to represent an “Awesome Point.”

In addition, there are a few extra rules. First, some question cards are “Pick 2” or cards, which require each participant to submit two cards in sequence to complete their answer. Second, a gambling component also exists. If a question is played which a player believes they have two possible winning answers for, they may pay in an Awesome Point to play a single second answer. If the player who gambled wins, they retain the wagered point, but if they lose, the player who contributed the winning answer takes both points.

After each round, the role of card czar rotates around the table, and play continues until everyone decides to stop.

4. Things in the box

Things… is a party game where everyone writes a response to a particular prompt, such as “Things… you shouldn’t put in your mouth,” and the players then try to guess which player wrote which response.

A reader is chosen. This reader reads aloud a Topic Card. The players all write a response, fold up the slip of paper and turn it in to the reader, who reads them aloud once and then a second time. The player to the left of the reader has to guess who wrote which response. This is all done from memory, without benefit of taking notes or having the responses read again. If the guesser is correct, he or she continues guessing until incorrect, at which time the player to his/her left tries guessing. Players whose responses were correctly identified are eliminated and cannot make guesses. The round ends when one player has not been matched to a response.

1 point is awarded for each correct guess. 6 points are awarded to the person who successfully avoided detection. The job of reader passes to the left. When everyone has been reader once, the game ends. High score wins.

This game could get really funny.  Let’s just say some people have some wild imaginations..

I think that’s just about it for now… Have fun!!

Event Ideas : Bad Movie Night.

Okay… some movies are just god awful to watch.. such as Battlefield Earth.

BUT… occasionally you run into movies that are soo bad, they are sooo good.  (in a funny way).  They are so ridiculously bad, you end up having fun making fun of it the entire time you are watching them.  Here are some examples…

Samurai Cop

Birdemic

The Room

I think it’ll be a fun night watching these awful movies while making fun of them MST3K style!  What do you guys think?
